Thermal coal
explotation in Cerrejon
in Colombia
Cerrejon is the operation of coal
mining of export to greater open
sky of the world. It is located in
the peninsula and department of
the Guajira, to the northeast of
Colombia. The coal deposits are
in an extension of 69,000
hectares, within which there are
five areas contracted thus: North
zone, Sideburn, South Oreganal
and Zone with the Colombian
state and Central Zone with the
Hillock Community. The present
capacity of coal production is
considered in
27.5 million metric
tons per year
.

Machinery transports: The mining
to open sky is an operation in
sequence that begins with the
cleaning of the surface and
careful retirement of the vegetal
layer, which is stored for the
future rehabilitation of the taken
part of earth. Soon, the
perforation, blast and removal of
the sterile material are carried
out until exposing the coal
mantles. The coal is transported
in trucks from the mine to the
storage center and the crushing
machines, then they take both to
silos that load the train.

The equipment and machineries
used in the mine are between
those of greater size and capacity
in the world and are of
technology outpost. In the mine
also are the factories of
maintenance for trucks, tractors
and trailers. Other facilities are
the factories of reconstruction,
administrative offices and a
system of telecommunications
that operate via satellite and
microwaves between Barranquilla,
the mine and
Port Bolivar where
generally the shipments are
realized.
